Meet my new-found love – American style classic pancakes with honey.
Yes this is the latest on my list of foodelicious obsession, though I never made it at home but have heard pancake stories from my H. So, one fine morning I finally decided to give it a try, and to my amazement H turned out to be super pancake chef ! It was so soft, fluffy and its smooth honeyed color texture makes it more appetizing. From that day I became an instant pancake fan and every sunday has to be the pancake day in my home.
Pancake is so versatile dish that it can be infinitely flavoured. Americans like their pancake with banana, or honey, maple syrup or simply with a scoop of freshly whipped cream and Europeans with some freshly chopped fruits. Every region has their own pancake stories to tell and Indians has their own version of spicy pancakes like dosa, uttapam and cheela.
Interestingly (for me !) this is a very primitive cereal based dish known to man and is usually fried on griddle or pan. Read here for more pancake stories around the world. There is an International day dedicated to pancakes. Feb 5 is International Pancake day ! Cheers to all Pancake fans out there. And one more trivia on pancake: there is also a 500-year-old tradition of pancake race. Read here the full story.
Classic American pancake with honey
All purpose flour: 2 cup
Milk: 2 cup
Egg: 1 large
Salt to taste
Sugar: 2 or 3 tsp
Baking powder: 1 tsp
Butter: 25 gm
Oil / butter for greasing
Method to prepare:
Sieve the flour and prepare a dry mix of flour, salt and baking powder.
In a wet bowl, prepare a wet mix of beaten egg, sugar and milk, whisk thoroughly untill it become smooth.
Now add the dry and wet mix together and blend it. Add the butter and blend it evenly to pouring consistency. Add more milk if requires, as the batter should be very smooth and lump free.
Heat the griddle or a non stick tawa (or pan), grease it with very little oil and pour a ladle full of pancake mix.
Wait for few minutes till the air bubbles rise to the surface and then flip them and cook for 1 more minute.
Smothered the pancakes with chocolate spread or jams or serve them hot simply with honey or maple syrup and topped it with some fresh fruits. You can try it with date syrup also, it really complements the sweet flavour of the pancake.
This is a very basic recipe to prepare fluffy pancakes and a perfect breakfst too. Easy for the beginners to prepare and takes only 30 minutes to make.
