Yesterday we had celebrated Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 🙏

💮Kojagari Lakshmi that falls on Sharad Purnima, has somehow become a part of me in my growing up years. A part of my childhood amidst every other things, narkel naru, Banana boats, alpona, uposh / fasting , alta , notun saree ...
And for people like us whose ancestry hails from erstwhile East Bengal ( Bangladesh now), this is much more than just a religious observance.
⏩This is more about sticking onto one's own cultural heritage and traditions, strive for cultural identity and way to connect back to your roots. At least for me.
And passing the baton to the next generation through series of rituals, traditions and folklore.

⏩⏩In my home we celebrate this Kojagari lokkhi pujo as a thanksgiving gesture,🙏🙏 thanking mother earth ( Ma Lakshmi) for good harvest of paddy, bountiful of fishes and good trade.
.
⏩ The banana boats or sapt- tari ( I made a quick fix one, as my kid wanted this) are nothing but symbolic of trade ships and in pujo we fill the ships with dhaan, panchsoshye, cowries and coins. All symbolic of good fortune.
.
In my home we worship Ma Lakshmi in form of Shora or paut . A clay disc in which images of Ma Lakshmi is painted, almost a dying art form now . I have adopted her in picture form .

💮Today is Maha Ashtami, the 8 th day of Devi Paksha. Today she is no longer Mrinmoyi ( clay idol), she is Mahishasurmardini, the living goddess, Shakti, the supreme power, the benign mother of universe.

She is invoked and worshipped today in all her nine forms as Nava Durga, as Ashta shakti , in her ferocious rudra roop..as Uma Kumari as she manifest herself in form of young girl who is pure in heart.
.
At the sacred juncture of Sandhi pujo between asthami and Navami, she opens her third eye and manifest herself as Devi Chamunda to slay Chand - Mund demons.
Later she is being worshipped by everyone ... By illuminating108 diyas and 108 blue lotus at her feet.
.
All the gods and godess worship her astra-shastra , known as Astra puja , another important ritual.
.
⏩⏩Beyond the rituals and festivities...
⏩⏩ the day when we will celebrate the birth of girl child and will embolden her and empower her, the true celebration of Maha Ashtami puja will be more meaningful in every respect.🙏

Today is the seventh day of Devi Paksha. Maha Saptami.
Today she is worshipped as Ma Kaalratri.
The celebration has begun yesterday and festive fervour continues... Amidst the hedonic fragrance of dhoop, chandan, karpur and flowers. Rhythmic resonance of dhaak, bells and conch... Pushpanjali, pujor notun saree, gaan, adda and mishti. Somewhere between we grew up..

The main ritual of maha saptami today is - Nabapatrika snan. An age old pauraanik tradition of uniting nine different plants, vital for the sustenance of life on earth. Banana, turmeric, colocassia, jayanti, pomegranate, bilva ( wood apple), ashok, aurum and dhaan / paddy - each denoting nine forms of Shakti. Devi Nabapatrika is invoked today, dressed up as new bride and then placed on the right side of Devi Durga.
.
This ritual is symbolic of the fact that after the fierce battle of victory of good over evil , world order need to be restored, re established and luxuriant vegetation reappear to sustain life on Earth 🌍.
.
🤔Why I am writing about these rituals of Durga Puja? In the midst of commercialization of almost everything, this is my humble attempt to tell the world why and how we celebrate Durga Puja. In the process, myth bursting of many pre conceived notion about Bengali culture.

The day begins with the hypnotic resonance of dhaaker taal coming from afar, announcing the arrival of agomoni to the nearest pandal,
.the scent of shiuli flowers wafting in the air, the kaash flowers swaying in the gentle breeze, telling tales of traditions that is seeped so deep in every Bengali's heart..
.
Sarodutsav begins today...
.
Whenever we used to visit Kolkata for Durga pujo, my dad would inevitably take us to Kumartuli , the place where faith meets art, on Panchami.
.
A mesmerizing sight to behold, as you watch in total amazement, the sculptors giving finishing touches to Ma Durga, with utmost devotion, before the idols are transported to their respective destinations.
.
The making of framework or chaala known as paat puja starts as early as, on the auspicious day of Rathyatra.
.
It is believed that seven types of clays are used, to make idol of Ma Durga, which includes one collected from the doorsteps of courtesans too, later mixed with the Ganga maati .
.
As per Vedas, nine classes of women or navkanya must be worshipped and revered during Durga Puja. Hence these ancient rituals are followed. Thus manifesting and revered Ma Durga as one, across all class and creed.
.
One of the main foremost ritual of Durga Puja begins today, usually falls on Panchami evening. It is "bilva nimantran ' to invite Ma Durga for puja. Ma Durga is first invoked in bilva tree ( bel tree) before invitation/ nimantran is send to her.
.
After an early morning visit to Kumartuli, a fabulous breakfast awaited us in one of the iconic north Kolkata mishti dokan -

Today is MAHALAYA 💮

For Bengali, the festivity starts right from the Mahalaya, the day announcing the ending of “Pitru Paksha” and beginning of “Devi Paksha“.
Mahalaya signifies the arrival of Agomoni or Goddess Durga, who symbolizes the “Adi Shakti“, the eternal power, the primordial cosmic energy.
.
Mahalaya is also the beginning of Akal Bodhan (the untimely worshiping of God) , the awakening of Devi Durga, invoking the Goddess on Earth before time.
.
For Bengalis the the day revolves around oratorical narration of “Chandi path” in the baritone voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra at the dawn in the akashvani, the beautiful mellifluous “Jago, tumi jago, jago Durga...”or shlokas and hymns from Devi Mahatyama scriptures to invoke the Goddess on Earth to save the world from the demon Mahishashur.
.
Another important aspect of this day is that the eyes are drawn on the idols of the Goddess Durga on Mahalaya in an auspicious ritual known as “Chokkhu Daan”, invoking her soul in the idol.

Making biryani at home is quite enthralling and stimulating for me. Biryani is not everyday rice and meat dish for me. In fact for me biryani is totally indulgence for me, fit for special occasions only.
But I find the restaurant biryani quite greasy and hence this home stlye biryani for me.
