Postcard from Newport – a cliff walk along the Atlantic

I know I am little lazy in posting my travel post or weekend getaways, time flies away, season changes and almost another quarter of this year is about to complete, but before it hit exactly 365 days, let me take you to the beautiful coastal town or city of Newport, in Rhode Island, a small unglamorous state whose existing is almost overshadowed by the towering neighbouring Massachusetts state.

After moving to Rhode Island in last June, on one fine and sunny weekend we decided to visit this beautiful, laid back coastal city of Newport, a cliff walk along the mighty Atlantic was on the offing and glimpse of 19th century Gilded age mansions built mostly by Vanderbilt’s.

It was almost two hours drive from our home, we woke up early to reach there before noon, just before entering Newport, a small lovely and cozy Jamestown greeted us, and the Verrazzano bridge connects to the Newport, the sea was bustling with activities, boats, yachts, surfers… all seems to enjoy the sunny weather.

Some of the majestic family owned mansions along the cliff, facing the prussian blue waters of Atlantic ocean, a true idyllic setting for dream houses of many. These mansions were mostly built by Vanderbilt family, who migrated here from Italy during the gilded age of America.

The 3.5 miles cliff walk is smooth for most of the part, and it has exits at multiple points, so whenever you feel to discontinue the walk,  you can do it but as you move south the cliffwalk becomes little dangerous, with rugged terrain, slippery sand and at places almost 70 feet drop to Atlantic, and these were often hidden in the wild bushes that grows along the cliff. With some caution, this cliffwalk is suitable for people of all ages.

The “Breakers ” is perhaps the most grandest mansions and most popular too.

These are wild white and pink rose bushes, interestingly they are single petal flowers unlike the usual roses and keeps the cliffwalk mildly scented.

 Hope you have enjoyed our Newport weekend getaways, by the time we finished the cliffwalk, it was almost past afternoon, hungrily we had some crab cakes and lobster rolls from nearby beach shacks, and could not get enough time to explore the Newport city and its so famed restaurants, but have read rave news about the seafood fare there.
